Unwelcome thoughts pop into his head as he wanders into a strange half-dream state.

The alarm – rude and insistent until he punches it silent – ends his tortured night.

You could walk past it without knowing it was there: the brass plaque is worn and dirty.

Known to the locals ironically as the Westerlies (they look east), they were used during the war Home Guard to watch for invading forces.
