Kevin watches the woman slip the formula into the pram. He’s seen her shoplift before.

At the counter, taking the nappies out of the wire basket, she avoids eye contact.

“You forgot something,” he says.

Guilty eyes meet his.

He places a bag of groceries on the counter.

“Happy Christmas.”

Snow was forecast the night Izzy died.

“Don’t come, love,” Kevin tells her over the phone. “The roads will be treacherous.”

“I’ll be careful, Dad.”

When the doorbell rings Kevin expects Izzy full of apologies for lateness and forgetting her keys.

Two policemen stand awkwardly where his daughter should be.

Kevin, the shopkeeper, is kind.

He helps her up, closes the store and carries her bags home.

He refuses the tip she offers.

When she unpacks her shopping she finds Kevin has slipped in a packet of her favourite biscuits.
