“animal tracks”

“I’m an apha male.”

He’s serious, she realises.

Keeping a straight face she asks what that means.

“You know,” he says. “A hunter gatherer type.”

She imagines him stumbling through a forest following animal tracks and laughter escapes her.

“You can’t even find what you’re looking for in the fridge!”

“The Tool Shed”

The key to my father’s shed feels much smaller than I remember.

The lock – rust-red but well-oiled – clicks.

The door swings open.

Tools neatly ranged, boxes of nails and screws clearly labeled.

A note, scrawled in his familiar hand.

“All yours now, son. Please, don’t make a mess.”

“cool runnings” : a 50-word story. Humpbuckle Tales 254

Every Sunday morning Cool Runnings Jogging Club meet at the park on the other side of town.

It’s a ragtag collection of odd shapes, sizes and ages.

John – his injured knee happily excluding him from joining in – often watches them from the safety of a table at the Park Cafe.

The smell of the yeast invokes summers spent with her grandmother.

Nanna loved to share her passion for baking with her granddaughter.

The week following the opening of Powerful Cymbols music shop, was better than Jay hoped.

“I never doubted that,” Jay says. “But it’s difficult to compete with the online stores.”

Despite his illness, and the subject matter, he smiles.

“It needs to be comfortable.”

She nods.

Time Traveller (6 of 6): “feet on the table”. Humpbuckle Tales 250

Days pass, the dream continues.

The world she finds herself in has new surprises everyday.

The large loud sky ships that streak over head are called Airplanes, apparently.

The moving picture box – television – shows her things she could never imagine.

Like putting feet on the table it just feels wrong.

Time Traveller (5 of 6): “memory stick”. Humpbuckle Tales 249

Perhaps she is dead.

Is this purgatory?

Or just a dream she is stuck in.

Or the memory of a dream.

Perhaps she has lost her mind.

The man brings her tea, and food.

He is gentle and kind, at least.

“I love you,” he says. He kisses her forehead.

Time Traveller (3 of 6): “winter sports”. Humpbuckle Tales 247

The cottage is the same.

But different.

A painting rests upon a low table.

It is bewitched, the image within moves.

Noticing her stare he asks “You want me to change the channel?”

He picks up something and a moment later the picture changes.

“Downhill skiing,” he says. “Your favourite.”
