A Lesson, by Bruce Arbuckle

“Let’s visit Earth!” They shimmer with excitement. Glerk hates that grim planet. It’s full of unfortunate creatures desperately clinging to life. But it’s an appropriate lesson on what can go wrong when you leave an inferior species in charge of a planetary ecosystem, and why occupation and control is crucial.

All my stories are my own. I do not (nor have I ever, nor will I ever) used any AI program to write my stories. I am personally against the use of AI to write (for me the whole point of writing is to use my own brain: that is the joy of writing for me). The screenshot is of a word counter app that I use when writing my stories to check that my Humpbuckle Tales are precisely 50 words long. I am human, #NOTaRobot

Continuation, by Bruce Arbuckle

The machine buzzed, rattled and groaned. “It looks like something from a 1950’s science fiction film,” Matt said. “Will it work?”  “It already has,” Claire laughed, pointing at the two figures – replicas of them both – standing at the shed door. “This isn’t the start of the story,” she said.

Curfew’s Call, by Bruce Arbuckle

Just after the curfew’s call, we run into a Sentinel. We lie in the sodden ditch, shivering with cold and fear, listening to the metalic clang of its approach, then the quiet hum as it searches for signs of life. I suppress a gasp as it steps over our heads.

Time Lag, by Bruce Arbuckle

She wasn’t prepared for how bad time travel would make her feel. I’ll never, she thought, as she fought the urge to vomit, complain about jet lag ever again. Although, looking around at the prehistoric landscape and the broken machine she’d arrived in, it was unlikely to be a problem.

Sludge, by Bruce Arbuckle

Brown sludge drips from the kitchen tap. It’s been like this for months.

The factory up the road has stolen their water. They deny it of course, the town council too. She picks up the wire cutters, pulls on the balaclava and nods at the others.

It’s time for action.

There is little resistance. Thanks to the Internet of Things most suffocate in the sealed boxes they call homes, offices, and cars. Their weapons, drones, and military systems are used against them. Artificial Intelligence controlled communication and media networks ensure news of the revolution is hidden. We have full control.
