The Alternatives, by Bruce Arbuckle

They met at the Morbid Responsibility Festival, the annual celebration of the 1980’s goth scene. In a sea of eyeliner, swept back hair, and flour dusted  jackets, they alone were not dressed in black. He wore a bright pink tutu, and she an original 1990’s rave t-shirt.

Great Expectations, by Bruce Arbuckle

What did he expect before he proposed live on national television ? Would she jump with joy, throw her arms around him, scream happily, cry  (with joy, obviously), mouth the word “yes” , or just nod, speachless. He didn’t anticipate derisive laughter, or that she’d leave, spitting out the words  “no way!”

Poison, by Bruce Arbuckle

For a long while he says he’s fine. Fooling no one, his friends play along with the deception. He doesn’t want to talk, leave him be. He swallows his feelings, buries them deep inside. They decompose slowly, the poison stains his skin yellow grey. His friends pretend not to notice.

A Dish Best Served Baked, by Bruce Arbuckle

The cookies smell good. Janice packs them into a tin. A housewarming present. A little late? Perhaps. The newcomer wasn’t welcomed correctly. But Peggy overstepped. Janice organises things in this community. There’s no room for competition. The empty rat poison bottle is binned and Janice takes her gift next door.

Doll, by Bruce Arbuckle

The wooden doll catches her eye as she hurries past the antique shop. She’s late for work but something about the way it is posed – little hands reaching out – is reminiscent of her mother and she skids to a standstill with comic strip suddenness. She laughs, then bursts into tears.

Grass, by Bruce Arbuckle

Court Number One (nicknamed the Supreme Court by members of the Humpbuckle Lawn Tennis Association) was only used on special occasions, like tomorrow’s televised Final. Bob smiled as he carefully poured toxic weedkiller over the pristine grass, spelling out the Cloud storage address containing the compromising photos of the mayor.

Waiting, by Bruce Arbuckle

He’s so weary his bones ache. He shuffles in the chair, changes the grip on the rifle, rubs his face. He won’t fall asleep, it’s the kind of tired that sleep fears. But he worries he won’t shoot the way he should. The signal shatters the nocturnal quiet. They’re coming.

Sludge, by Bruce Arbuckle

Brown sludge drips from the kitchen tap. It’s been like this for months.

The factory up the road has stolen their water. They deny it of course, the town council too. She picks up the wire cutters, pulls on the balaclava and nods at the others.

It’s time for action.

Execution, by Bruce Arbuckle

There is little resistance. Thanks to the Internet of Things most suffocate in the sealed boxes they call homes, offices, and cars. Their weapons, drones, and military systems are used against them. Artificial Intelligence controlled communication and media networks ensure news of the revolution is hidden. We have full control.
